Founded in 1985, Ballet San Antonio has grown to be one of the premier ballet ensembles in the country. With the leadership of its current chair, Lisa Galo Westmoreland, along with the company’s board members, BSA seeks out and supports outstanding professional dancers, produces innovative shows, and collaborates with community groups to bring dance to as many people as possible.

Apart from its mesmerizing stage performances, Ballet San Antonio also takes part in community outreach events to spread its wings. In addition to facilitating access to dance’s transformative power, these projects help to enrich South Texas’s culture. Sharing the wonder and delight of dance with people from all walks of life, BSA is deeply involved in the local community through its educational initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations.

With the world-class performances that the company produces every single year, the ballet ensemble continually fulfills its mission of honoring the rich cultural history of the South Texas community. By bringing a variety of artistic performances and community outreach initiatives that showcase the beauty of dance, Ballet San Antonio is more than just an ensemble of skilled and talented dancers and choreographers. It is a cultural cornerstone, weaving a vibrant tapestry that connects art, community, and heritage.

BSA’s 2023 – 2024 season kicked off with the holiday production of The Nutcracker. As a favorite Christmas staple, the Tchaikovsky classic was a major success for Ballet San Antonio. And that success will surely continue in 2024 as the ballet ensemble will be back at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to perform another classic favorite: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Inspired by a play by the great William Shakespeare, the ballet production is choreographed by resident choreographer Rafael Ferreras.

Together with two other resident choreographers for their 2023-2024 season, Ferreras was off for a busy season. Last year’s Nutcracker was a major success, and the pressure to stage an equally magnificent production with A Midsummer Night’s Dream is upon his shoulders. However, this is a task that Ferreras is confident and more than capable of taking. After all, Ferreras has been one of the best ballet dancers and choreographers in the state.

He is known for his lead roles in different ballet productions, which showcased his incredible talent. His performances in productions like Cinderella, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Dracula, The Firebird, Le Corsaire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Nutcracker made him well-known among theatergoers. He received his early ballet training in New York with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Joffrey Ballet School. After graduating from ballet school, Ferreras was able to hone his talent by performing in different ballet productions. He was able to perform with reputable ballet productions, including Ballet Memphis, Elisa Monte Dance, Hartford Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, and Tulsa Ballet. In addition, he has worked with some of the most esteemed choreographers, such as Mark Godden, Paul Taylor, Nacho Duato, Trey McIntyre, and Kirk Peterson, among many others.

Ferreras has branched out from his ballet dancing profession to teach and choreograph. In 2005, he debuted his first mainstage performance of Politics in New York City, which he choreographed for Ballet Memphis — and this year, he will choreograph his first full-length ballet production with San Antonio Ballet.

“Everyone interprets the story in their way. For me, this performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream captures the feeling you have when you first wake up in the morning and you’re half awake, in a dream world. It is the first full-length ballet I am choreographing, and we are all very excited,” stated Ferreras in an interview.

The dancers are tenacious. Their professionalism and single-minded determination reflects well on the strength they have gained over the past few years.” – San Antonio Reporter
